Be aware of the core of the shadow!! The core is the area of the shadow where there is no direct light nor reflected light in the area. Thus the core will give the drawing a dark punch.
Stay out of the purgatory of not having enough light - dark contrast.
The darks will be
a. In the core "no man's land"
b. The edge of the dark shadow - or cast shadow. "Core of the cast shadow."
c. In an area of a pinch - Where the light is pinched out - At the point where two objects touch.
Always make up cores because the cores drive the movement in your figure.
There are 4 levels of light: Low light, mid light, highlight, and sparks.
The lights will be
a. In the highlights-top of the form
b. When the form is under stress (skin, pleat, bones, tendons, etc.)
c. In the sparks - these love to hide under form shadows.
d. Along the edge of the core of the cast shadow.
Developing the picture in light
1. Draw with articulation techniques
2. Identify the cores
3. Unify the entire object by filling out the light side in low light - try drawing in a one directional line. "Think of catching the light and spilling the light within your picture to separate the dark and light."
4. 1/3 of the lowlight will be mid-light- from here on out try to draw topographically or in a way where you grid out the object - follow the form.
5. 1/3 of the mid-light will be the highlight
6. 1/3 of the highlight will be the spark.
Thanks for uploading all the notes and scans! :) It helps a lot!
