Here are some of mark's inclass examples of x and y axis and line vocalization
HomeWork

1. Copy 2 cadmus drawings - Use ballpoint pen and white sharpened prismacolor pencil.
2. Copy 2 Hogarth's drapery in black pen and render them dynamically in Cadmus style cross-hatching using sharpened white prismacolor pencil.
3. Copy and label anatomy chart.

For the Personal Character Design Project answer the following questions.
1. What is the story about? What are the struggles? Challenges? Morals? War? etc.
2. Where does it take place - the setting?
3. When or what period in history does it take place?
4. Who are the antagonists?
5. Who are the protagonists?
6. How do these answers influence costume design, vehicles, and atmosphere?

Homework will always be in the grey sketchbook from now on until otherwise indicated.

Here are the notes and the example to the lecture in class.
Don't forget he has it entire book on his website if you want to check it out.
Things to learn when drawing
-Try drawing with a dark, soft charcoal - 6b is the pencil mark prefers
-Be prepared for your pencil breaking - compensate by having them pre-sharpened.
1. Sharpen pencil.
2. Distinguish the drawing techniques between a line and a wash. a) Line - line vocalization (let the fingernails touch the pad. Draw with charcoal pencil as if you're cutting with an exacto-knife. Pull the charcoal. Practice: pull the pencil and vary the darkness of the line as well as the
b) Line into a wash (thin into thick)
3. Wash only for the lay-in : hold the pencil at right angles as to pulling the line. Use the broad side of the pencil.
4. Tubes and cubes - tubes are for foreshortening and usually you draw the beginning and the end of the circle part of the tube is at a bending point of the body (elbows, finger joints, knees, etc.). However to many tubes and cubes are dangerous because they might get in the way of your drawing. At the bending point a) replace the tube by lightly going around the form with the wash aspect of the charcoal technique. b) break into the line to give a 3D effect. Breaking the form is breaking the line with another line, causing an overlap of lines at the end circles of the tube. Together you can you your outside inside technique. "b" replaces the cube and paint technique. The cube play the role of the shift in the planes and which way it turns in space.
Often times you can take advantage of the x-y axis of the cube. The core being x the opposite stroke being the placement of the cube the (y). Use the y to indicate where the plane is turning in space. The core is usually the flow of the figure.
5. Articulate - The straight lines are usually found in the area where there are tendons.

Cadmus high points. Analysis of form. Teaches the direction of the paint brush strokes. The flow of the the figure.

Sharpening your pencil
1. Start up about and inch and a half up on the pencil. You want to have a long and sharp tip.
2. Start carving off paper thin pieces of the wood shavings. Turn the pencil while your shaving off the wood in order to get an even sharpened pencil.
3. Sanding your charcoal - Place your finger on the charcoal part of the pencil and then sand while rotating the pencil.

General Homework assignment

1. Do one page of using the markers and copying the silhouettes from the first page.
2. Then do three pages of selected drawings from the given packet. Choose at least 3 of the drawings and then copy.
3. According to what he talked about, proceed with the rest of the drawing.
- A page of character silhouette (like the example from the first page of the packet) and then 2 pages of character drawing and design. It's best to back up your characters with a story or at least some background information - Such as who are they? Where are they from? What Time are they from? Etc.

For the markers try the copic #100 black marker. It's refillable and it's a great tool to have for when you make dark silhouettes. These drawings are to be done in the sketchbook.

There were some people who didn't turn in their homework today. Make sure you get it in by next week. Good luck guys and great work!

Right Brain Drawing Techniques:

1. Articulation "Straight, Round, and Bent"
2. Breaking in the form (Creates 3-D illusion on 2-D space)
3. Flattening the space
4. Side to Side for fluid movement (angle-cop)
5. Hard and Soft Edges , Contained Shapes
6. Line vocalization
7. Arm as a drawing machine.

3 Mistakes/Wrong Things of Articulation

1. Loping - Meaning you only have rounds. (Looks like a sack of potatoes)
2. Mindless tracing - Water reflection tracing
3. Careless over-simplification - fingers that look like cartoon hands
*Don't overwork the line - practice drawing the line in one movement rather that sketching every aspect out of it.

Hey guys! I got a message from Mark about how there was a shortage of the sketchbook that he asked you guys to buy, so just in case you haven't got one or don't know what you should do here it is:

1) You can wait for the restock of sketchbook to arrive in the students store, but in the meantime, you can buy sheets of canson or charcoal paper (any color) and cut to roughly about 8.5 by 11 and then stick them inside your notebook later. Later on he'll tell you to buy and use pottery green paper so if you guys want to test that color out feel free to do so.

2) There is another sketchbook out there that's cream colored rather than the cool grey one that you can get if you want, and do you homework in there.

3) You can buy any other kind of mid-toned paper (any color) from the sales that they are having at the stores all around.

If you guys have any questions feel free to ask me or Mark (626 251 3074) anytime.

1. Next friday bring in examples of both your work and print-outs or books of 5 things you'd love to do.
2. Copy 5 Carlos Huante in you new grey note book and try your hand at rendering them with white prisma color pencils. Draw with the pen first (to the best that you can - don't worry about getting ALL of the line qualities - he used pencils/progresso) then render to the best you can with a white prisma color pencil.
